John received an English degree from UNC-Chapel Hill with intensive course work in studio art, and he studied design at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta. He studied clay at the Carborro Arts Center, Claymakers in Durham, and at Clayworks, where he is now a studio artist. He was recently selected for the “Carolina’s Got Art” Juried Show at Elder Gallery. John hand builds using heavy grog, inducing cracking and partial collapse of a piece, showing gravity, tension and motion. Resulting forms often look like fossilized bone or crumbling ruins. Wood firing emphasizes his work’s organic, complex surfaces and gives it a sense of time.
