Making Pottery & Sculpture Tools
with Penny Overcash

During this hands on mini workshop, Penny will demonstrate how to make various tools used in pottery and ceramic sculpture. Students will then have the opportunity to make their own set of tools with Penny’s guidance. Tools will include basic needle tools and the small specialty tools used for making finger nails and to form the eyes and nose in figurative sculpture. Additional tools will include polymer clay “thumbs” for sculpture and hand building as well as other tools for making textures and marks in the clay (hair tools, forming eye balls etc.) Polymer clay will be used for comfortable handles and other textural implements. Participants will bake the tools in class and everyone will leave with a set of tools that they can use for many years to come.

Session 1: Lid Making

Starting in February – Clayworks introduces mini workshops, taught by Clayworks instructors, that will explore a single topic or technique for 2-3 hours.
Begin the series in February, with Adrienne Dellinger, as she teaches you various lid making techniques.

Session 2: Surface Inlay on Porcelain

In this workshop Julie will demonstrate slip inlay surface decoration using porcelain clay. Using an x-acto blade to hand draw patterns and designs along with a few other mark making tools. She will describe processes for inlay and ideas for drawing onto your pots.

Session 3: Stamp Making with Amy Sanders
Saturday June 16, 2012 10:00am – 12:30pm
This hands-on mini workshop will focus on creating tools to add custom pattern and texture to your pots. Participants will have a chance to make stamps with a variety of methods, roller stamps, and texture plates. We will also cover several other mark-making methods , such as stamp appliqué and texture stenciling, to enhance the surface of your pots. Come with ideas and leave with a multitude of tools!
