About Clayworks Classes
Clayworks offers a variety of classes for students of all skill levels.
Classes are taught by highly educated and skilled artists in a hands-on environment.
Tuition includes
Open Studio time with 24/7 access to the studio
1 – 25lb bag of clay provided
Access to a variety of glazes and slips
Kiln firing of all work completed during the class session

Beginning Wheel
Designed for students who have never used the potter’s wheel and students who are still developing throwing skills. Participants will learn how to center the clay on the wheel and make basic forms such as mugs, bowls, and vases. Students will learn how to finish their work with decorating and glazing techniques.

Beginning Clay: Wheel and Handbuilding
This class is designed for the true beginner, no previous experience necessary. Students will explore basic handbuilding and wheel throwing as well learn various decorating and glazing techniques.

Intermediate Wheel
Designed for students who have completed beginning wheel class and want to improve their throwing skills. This class offers students the opportunity to create more complex vessels such as lidded jars, teapots and altered forms. Students will learn more complex decorating and glazing techniques.

Handbuilding: Find your own voice in clay
This class is designed to encourage students with prior handbuilding experience to become more independent makers. The session will begin with making custom texture tools that will be used on projects later in class. Projects will be varied, and made primarily from slabs, with a particular focus on tableware and vase forms. Students will learn to create their own templates and forms. Low fire or cone 5 clay may be used.

Handbuilding
This class is designed for students who have no experience working with clay. This class will focus on various handbuilding techniques with an emphasis on surface design and glazing techniques.

Sculpture
Designed for students with some throwing skills. This class will provide a variety of handbuilding and throwing techniques for achieving large-scale and abstract forms. Students will work with stoneware. Glazing and firing considerations will be presented.

Figurative Form in Clay
This class is designed for those who have some previous hand building skills. We will explore the figure and its construction using coil, slab and direct building techniques. Students will be asked to bring in a picture or pictures of a figurative subject. These may be human – female, male or an animal of any kind that they would like to explore. We will use the picture as a base for general intention as we consider the figure and its basic components. The focus will be on interpretation of form and perception using clay as the vehicle to express ideas, gestures and concepts. Low fire clays will be used and extensive techniques for finishing will be discussed. The use of slips, oxide washes, underglazes and glazes will be utilized.

Advanced Wheel
Advanced wheel class is designed for students who have good throwing skills and need space and time to work. Critiques will be an integral part of class. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace. The instructor will provide appropriate demonstrations for all students in the class. The class will work primarily with cone 10 reduction firing. Surface techniques will be emphasized and expanded upon.
